Step 1: Gear Up for Safety First
Before plugging in your welding machine, put on essential protective equipment to avoid burns and UV radiation:
Wear an auto-darkening welding helmet with the correct shade level (Shade 10–13).
Wear heavy leather welding gloves and a flame-resistant jacket or apron.
Choose long denim pants and steel-toe boots. Never wear synthetic fabrics like polyester, as they can melt onto your skin.
Step 2: Set Up Your Workstation
Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoor space to prevent breathing in toxic metal fumes.
Clear away all flammable materials (rags, gasoline, cardboard, or dry wood) within a 35-foot radius.
Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher within reach.
Step 3: Attach the Ground Clamp
Connect the ground clamp directly to clean, bare metal on your workpiece.
Place the clamp as close to the welding joint as possible. A solid ground connection ensures a stable electric arc and prevents voltage drops.
Step 4: Adjust Machine Amperage
Set the output current on your inverter machine according to the thickness of your metal and electrode size:
For 3/32" (2.5mm) electrodes: Set the machine to 60–90 Amps.
For 1/8" (3.2mm) electrodes: Set the machine to 90–130 Amps.
Step 5: Strike the Arc & Weld
Strike the Arc: Gently scratch the electrode tip against the metal like striking a match. Once sparks appear, lift the tip about 1/8 inch off the surface.
Maintain Angle & Speed: Hold the rod or torch at a 10° to 15° angle in the direction you are traveling. Move steadily along the joint to form an even weld bead.
Clean the Slag: After the metal cools, wear safety glasses and use a chipping hammer and wire brush to knock off the protective glass-like slag layer.
